What Makes a Slab Last
A properly constructed concrete slab accounts for:

Rebar in the Right Place: Rebar must be in the lower third of the slab to resist tension from loads above. Rebar lying on the ground does nothing—use chairs or dobies to position it 2 inches from the bottom. Wire mesh is worthless if it's pulled up during the pour; it needs to stay mid-slab.
For a typical 4-inch driveway or patio, we position #4 rebar 18 inches on center, supported 2 inches above the base. For areas with heavier loads or poor subbase conditions, we increase rebar size or spacing.
Drainage Slope: 1/4" Per Foot Is Non-Negotiable
This is where many DIY or budget projects fail: All exterior flatwork needs 1/4" per foot slope away from structures—that's 2% grade minimum. For a 10-foot driveway, that's 2.5 inches of fall.
Water pooling against foundations or on slabs causes spalling, efflorescence, and freeze-thaw damage.
On patios and driveways, we establish this slope during subbase preparation. For stamped concrete or decorative finishes, the slope is still required—it's just invisible to the eye. We build it into the subgrade so the finished surface appears level to the casual observer while water sheds properly.
Control Joints: Controlling Where Concrete Cracks
Concrete cracks. It's not a failure—it's concrete's nature as it cures and temperature cycles occur. Control joints guide those cracks into predetermined locations where they're less visible and easier to maintain.
We use either saw-cut control joints (cut into the slab 24–48 hours after curing) or tooled control joints (formed during finishing). Saw-cutting is more precise and recommended for high-visibility areas. Tooling is appropriate for utility areas where appearance is secondary.
Spacing depends on slab thickness and exposure, but typically 4–6 feet apart for driveways and patios. Improper or missing control joints often result in random cracking across the entire surface.
Concrete Repair & Resurfacing
Not all concrete work is new construction. Older driveways, patios, and slabs may show:
